Solo Rubab & Tanbour — Eslam Elshaary

Room Art Space, New Cairo

An intimate solo performance on two rare instruments — the Afghan rubab and the Persian tanbour — performed in near-darkness with only low, warm lighting.

The evening follows the journey of a bird — a traveling, searching thread that runs through Eslam Elshaary's work — carried through story and sound rather than visuals. Between pieces, he speaks: fragments of a journey across borders, longing, and return, tying the music to a single unfolding narrative rather than a set of unrelated songs.

Eslam Elshaary is a composer and multi-instrumentalist known for his work centered on the rubab, blending Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Central Asian musical traditions. This evening strips the performance down to its essentials: no stage lighting, no screens, no accompaniment — just voice, string, story, and silence.

Expect a quiet, unconventional format: the room stays dark throughout, and the audience is asked to settle in and follow the bird's journey rather than expect a typical concert experience.
